Internal linking is the architecture of links that connects the pages of your site together. It is one of the most powerful and underutilized SEO levers. Good internal linking distributes PageRank efficiently, helps search engines discover and understand your content, and guides users to your most important pages. This guide covers key concepts, strategies, and metrics that TeckBlaze uses to evaluate your internal linking.
Internal linking refers to all hyperlinks connecting pages within the same website. Unlike backlinks (external links from other sites), internal linking is entirely under your control. Each internal link transmits PageRank (ranking value) from the source page to the target page, and helps Google's crawlers discover and explore your content.
Strategic internal linking creates a silo site architecture: pages are organized into thematic clusters connected by contextual links. The cluster's pillar page links to sub-pages, and sub-pages link among themselves and back to the pillar page. This structure clearly signals to Google the hierarchy and relationships between your content.
TeckBlaze analyzes your site's internal linking by measuring five key dimensions: inbound link count per page, orphan pages (with no inbound links), click depth from the homepage, dead-end pages (with no outbound internal links), and an overall linking score from 0 to 100.
Internal linking is also crucial for user experience. Relevant internal links guide visitors to related content, increase time on site, reduce bounce rate, and create intuitive navigation paths. A user who lands on a page with no internal links is at a dead end.
An orphan page is a page that has no inbound internal links. No other page on your site points to it. Orphan pages are invisible to Google's crawlers, which discover pages by following links. If an orphan page isn't in your sitemap, it will likely never be discovered or indexed.
Orphan pages are a common problem on sites that grow over time. Pages are created but never integrated into existing navigation or content. Site restructurings can also create orphans when links to certain pages are removed without redirects.
TeckBlaze detects all orphan pages during the audit. A page is considered orphaned if it has zero inbound internal links and a depth greater than zero (the homepage naturally has zero inbound links as the crawl starting point). The report lists each orphan page with its depth and URL.
To fix orphan pages, add contextual links from thematically related pages. If a page is no longer relevant, redirect it (301) to a related page or remove it. Every important page on your site should be accessible through at least 2-3 internal links.
Click depth measures the minimum number of clicks needed to reach a page from the homepage. Google recommends that important pages be accessible within a maximum of 3 clicks from the homepage. The deeper a page is in the tree structure, the less PageRank it receives and the less likely it is to be frequently crawled.
TeckBlaze measures the depth of every crawled page. Pages at depth greater than 3 are flagged as medium severity. Pages at depth 5 or more are rarely crawled by Google and have very little chance of ranking well, even if their content is excellent.
To reduce click depth: add links to deep pages from the homepage or main navigation pages, create thematic hubs that centralize links to a cluster of pages, use breadcrumbs to add structural links, and include "Related articles" or "Also read" sections at the bottom of your content pages.
Click depth also affects user experience. A user who must click 6 times to find the information they're looking for is likely to abandon before reaching it. A flat architecture (3 clicks maximum) facilitates content discovery.
PageRank is the ranking value Google assigns to each page based on the links it receives. Internal links distribute your site's PageRank among your own pages. The more internal links a page receives from high-PageRank pages, the more ranking value it accumulates.
PageRank is divided equally among all links on a page. If a page with a PageRank of 100 has 10 outbound links, each target page receives 10 units of PageRank. This is why it's important not to dilute your links: don't put 50 links on every page if only 10 pages deserve to be highlighted.
The optimal strategy is to concentrate internal links toward your most important pages (sales pages, pillar pages, cornerstone content). These pages should receive the most inbound internal links. Secondary pages can have fewer links but should always be accessible.
TeckBlaze measures the number of inbound internal links for each page and integrates it into the linking score. The scoring awards +5 points per inbound link (max +25), +10 if the page is at depth 2 or less, and -30 if the page is orphaned. This score lets you compare the relative importance of your pages in your link architecture.
A dead-end page is a page with no outbound internal links. Users who reach this page cannot continue navigating your site. Google's crawlers are also blocked: they cannot discover other pages from a dead-end.
Dead-end pages increase bounce rate because users have no choice but to go back or leave the site. Every page should contain at minimum 3-5 outbound internal links to related content, a navigation page, or a call to action.
TeckBlaze detects dead-end pages and penalizes them in the linking score (-10 points for zero outbound links). The report recommends adding contextual links to thematically related pages. "Related articles," "Discover," and breadcrumb sections are effective solutions.
For blog and content pages, always include natural internal links in the body text. An article about Core Web Vitals should naturally link to your Performance page, an article about internal linking to your Technical SEO page. These contextual links are the most powerful for SEO.
Use descriptive anchor text for your internal links. "Learn more" or "click here" tells Google nothing about the target page. Prefer "see our guide on Core Web Vitals" or "discover our internal linking recommendations." Descriptive anchors reinforce the thematic relevance of the link.
Create a silo architecture with pillar pages and content clusters. The pillar page covers a broad topic and links to detailed articles. Detailed articles link back to the pillar page and to each other. This structure concentrates thematic relevance and PageRank on the cluster.
Audit your internal linking regularly with TeckBlaze. Sites that publish content frequently must ensure new articles are integrated into the existing link structure. Every new article should contain links to 3-5 existing pages, and relevant existing pages should be updated to link to the new article.
Avoid broken internal links. An internal link pointing to a 404 page wastes PageRank and creates a bad user experience. TeckBlaze detects broken links (internal and external) during every audit and flags them with their HTTP code (404, 500, timeout).

There's no strict limit, but best practices recommend between 3 and 10 internal links per content page. Every page should have at minimum 3 outbound internal links to related content. Pillar pages and navigation pages can have more links (15-20) since their role is precisely to distribute traffic. Avoid exceeding 100 total links (internal + external) per page as this dilutes PageRank transmitted by each link. To improve your TeckBlaze linking score, focus on three actions: first, eliminate orphan pages by adding contextual links from existing pages; second, reduce click depth by adding links from the homepage or navigation pages to deep pages; third, add outbound internal links on dead-end pages with "Related articles" sections or contextual links in the text. The TeckBlaze score awards +5 points per inbound link, +10 if the page is at depth 2 or less, and penalizes orphans (-30) and deep pages (-20 for depth 5+).
